Ledger Live Review: What the Companion App Does and Where It Stops

Ledger Live is the companion application for Ledger's hardware wallets. It is where you check balances, add accounts, buy or swap through integrated providers and — the important part — confirm transactions that the connected device signs. This note looks at what it does well and where its responsibilities end.

What it manages

Ledger Live tracks portfolios across the assets a connected device supports, installs the per-network apps the device needs, and routes transaction requests to the device for approval. The private keys never leave the secure element; the app assembles a transaction and the device signs it after you confirm the details on its own screen.

That separation is the point. Even on a compromised computer, a transaction still has to be approved on the device, where the address and amount are shown independently of the app.

Where it stops

• It is not custody. Ledger Live does not hold your funds; the device and your recovery phrase do. Losing both loses the assets.
• Integrated services are third parties. Buy, sell and swap features route through outside providers with their own fees and terms. The app is a front end, not the counterparty.
• On-screen verification is still on you. The device shows the real destination and amount. Approving without reading them defeats the security model.

The verdict

As a management layer over a hardware wallet, Ledger Live does the job it is meant to do and keeps signing on the device. Treat its integrated buy/swap features as conveniences with third-party terms, verify every transaction on the device screen, and remember that the recovery phrase, not the app, is what actually protects the funds.
